Why is hemp a sustainable product?
Hemp is one of the most versatile plants in the world and can provide hundreds of environmentally friendly products such as nutritious foods, oils and seed; versatile long wearing clothing, shoes, bags and accessories; human and eco friendly building materials like insulation; paper that will last hundreds of years and recycle easily while not requiring a single tree to be cut down; baby diapers that are strong, re-useable and re-cycle-able; body and home care products, surf boards, etc., just to name a few; all while lowering the invasive impact on our now fragile earth. The hemp plant is a highly evolved plant that has been significant to human civilizations for thousands of years, and it actually improves the soil as it grows, all while requiring little fertilizer, no pesticides and no herbicides.
Hemp Food
Hemp seeds are one of nature's best foods which is high in protein (25%) and contains 8 amino acids and the 3 essential fatty acids (Omega 3, 6 and 9) known to improve the immune system. It also includes 13 vitamins including A and E and does not require hexane processing as does soy. The seed oil is low in saturated fats, which makes it good for lowering cholesterol and improving the cardiovascular system, and as a bonus, it has a pleasant nutty flavor.
Hemp Oils
Hemp oil with its EFA's (Essential Fatty Acids), is an excellent base for natural and biodegradable soaps, shampoos and cosmetics.
Hemp Clothing
Hemp fiber is stronger than wool or cotton and requires 1/20 the water of cotton. Growing cotton uses almost 30% of the world's insecticides and over 10% of the world's pesticides, which makes cotton the 3rd largest industrial polluter. Hemp uses little water and does not require pesticides or herbicides. It is naturally antibacterial and antimicrobial.
Hemp Building Materials
Hemp is used to make Hempcrete, also known as Isochandra, which is stronger than cement at 1/6 the weight. It is also used for insulation without the potential harmful health affects of fiberglass particles. Hemp can also be made into a strong wood substitute. Hemp plastic is lighter than steel and can absorb 10 times the impact without denting.
